Safety Plan
Scenario 1: Someone falls off a ledge and badly injures their leg, requiring medical attention and maybe a stretcher / Someone overdoses at the venue
Someone should locate a safety coordinator with caution tape armband and let them know. The safety person will consult with harm reduction / a street medic / the team / their own knowledge / the injured person to coordinate care. The safety person will try to find alternatives to calling EMTs, and assist with emergency Ubers / calling ER directly as necessary. The safety person will coordinate information flow to friends of the injured / nebby onlookers so the mood of night is less disrupted. The safety coordinator will get the injured person some privacy.
Scenario 2: Someone else calls EMTs, the cops show up, and decide to shut down the party / There is a noise complaint, and cops show up to negotiate
Refer police to the safety person, but don't indicate that they are in charge or responsible for the party. "No one is in charge, you can talk to me." If you're not comfortable talking to cops, can take the safety band off. Don't let non-staff members talk to police. Don't answer questions but be accommodating and helpful about finding solutions.
Know something about the legality of the space ("We were planning on getting out of here around 11! We've been monitoring the decibels and it shouldn't be violating ordinances."). Safety officer makes the final calls about cop strategy.
We're not trying to do an alternative location because it's not worth the effort.
Scenario 4: The cops pull up with hostile energy, and we decide to clear the area and break down quickly
"bug out plan" Do crowd control and flow of people. Ease paranoia and anxiety. Coordinate volunteer labor? Make sure the event is staffed with a sound person who can help quickly. Make sure van for sound is close to the stage. Table staff need to keep an eye on parking.
Scenario 5: There are loose cords and lasers in people's eyes or the sky
Safety manager will keep an eye out for these dangers and talk to people.
Scenario 6: Someone is touching others non-consensually / creepin
Info flows to safety manager. Safety manager makes the final calls. Default to kicking someone out. If someone is belligerent, need to be able to quickly swarm them with staff and push them out.
